Chisenhale Art Place

Chisenhale Art Place is a unique centre for artists, art production, education, performance and exhibition. It provides a supportive workplace and vibrant public platform for London’s East End art community, local and international audiences.
Located close to Victoria Park, in the heart of Bethnal Green-Mile End, Chisenhale Art Place has occupied the former veneer factory and brewery buildings on Chisenhale Road since 1980 and has recently secured a further 25 year lease on the property. It is home to 40 artist’s studios and two arts organisations; Chisenhale Dance Space and Chisenhale Gallery.
The artist-run Studios provide secure affordable work space to both established and emerging artists. Chisenhale Dance Space is a centre for research and development in movement arts and independent dance. Chisenhale Gallery is one of London’s most innovative galleries for contemporary visual art, promoting national and international developments in visual culture through its ambitious commissioning of solo exhibitions and a newly established programme of events including performances, film screenings and talks.
The Studios, Dance Space and Galleries each have their own vibrant public education and outreach programme that reflects their unique specialist activities and identity.

During the Open Weekend, all of the artists will open their studios. There will be guided tours at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday afternoon when the artists will give short talks about their work. The studios will also host talks by other East-end artists. John Frankland, an internationally acclaimed local artist will give a talk on Saturday at 4pm about Boulder, his ambitious public sculptures situated in Mabley Green and Shoreditch Park. John will lead a walk to Mabley Green after his talk. At 3pm on Sunday, Intoart, London based artist collective that includes people who have a learning disability will talk about their work. They will be resident one day a week in the Education studio at Chisenhale Art Place from 2010.
Phyllida Barlow, renowned contemporary sculptor will give an informal talk, at 4pm on Sunday in the Carl Plackman studio, about Carl’s work and its influence on a generation of sculptors. This will be a unique opportunity to experience Carl’s work in the space in which it was created.

Chisenhale Gallery
Chisenhale Gallery’s ongoing exhibition will be a major solo show by British artist Tariq Alvi. Working intuitively, recycling and re-contextualizing found printed matter from newspapers and magazine advertising, Alvi’s labour intensive works present us with both disarmingly simple and complex aesthetic forms that reflect upon contemporary society. For his exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery, Alvi will create a site-specific installation exploring ideas of value and exchange.
On Saturday afternoon from 2pm to 5pm the gallery will host a free Family Day. The artist Sarah Doyle will lead a free drop-in art workshop inspired by Tariq Alvi’s exhibition.

Chisenhale Dance Space
The Dance Space will screen a series of short films on Friday evening in their communal space. The space is open for business all weekend, with rehearsals and classes for children and professionals running as usual, feel free to make your way up to the space for a cup of tea and a chat about what dance activity is available in your area! On Sunday afternoon from 2pm to 5pm the Dance Space will host a Family Day. Resident dance tutors will offer free drop-in taster classes for children aged 6-12 in a range of dance styles from classical to street dance.
